How to Hang Decorations on Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is one of the most popular choices in siding materials on modern homes, but what do you do when the holidays are fast approaching and you’ve got a pile of decorations to hang and nowhere to put them?

Homeowners with vinyl siding can feel stuck in a decorating rut, but fear no more—there are methods to hang your decorations without being destructive to the vinyl.

Vinyl Clips/Hooks

First and foremost, put down the hammer and nails because making holes into your vinyl will impede its performance and decrease the value of your home.  Instead, opt for a vinyl siding hook, a handy little invention that slips beneath the siding, snapping into place.

The vinyl hook secures itself onto the bottom of the siding, giving you the perfect opportunity to hang your decorations without inflicting damage to the vinyl.  You can find vinyl siding hooks just about anywhere, your local hardware store, a garden store, and most certainly online.  They’re inexpensive and will save you money by allowing you to hang decorations on siding without the worry of damaging it as well as the repair costs.

Suction Cups

Another method involves harnessing the power of suction. Purchase a suction cup with a hook attachment large enough to accommodate the size and weight of your decorations you wish to hang.  Next, wipe down the area of the vinyl siding where you plan on hanging your decorations thoroughly, with soap and water, then allow it to dry completely.

If there’s dirt lingering on the vinyl surface, your suction cup won’t be as secure as it can be.  If the dirt is particularly stubborn, you can even apply some rubbing alcohol to clean the area.  Finally, wet the suction cup for better adhesion and press it firmly against the vinyl surface.  For best results, allow the suction cup to remain there for a day or so before you hang your decorations.

Make Your Own Hook for Vinyl Soffit Trim

Your vinyl soffit trim makes for another simple method to hang decorations on vinyl surfaces. The vinyl soffit trim is the trim that connects your vinyl siding and the soffit. If you have access to a short piece of wire and some wire cutters, this method will only take a few moments, but you’ll have to be sure you’re using a wire that won’t rust, otherwise, you could damage your vinyl siding.

Use your wire cutters to make the piece of wire into a hook shape (rather, an S-shape so it can hang properly), and if needed, cut the wire down to an appropriate length.  Hang the wire from the vinyl soffit trim.

You have the option now of hanging decorations directly from your newly formed wire hook or you can wrap fishing line around the hook and hang your decorations on that.  The fishing wire is a nice trick because it is not only invisible to the eye, but it grants you the ability to position your decorations, too.

Hanging Decorations on Vinyl Siding

The easiest way to hang decorations on vinyl siding is by purchasing vinyl siding clips, our first mentioned method.  These clips can be found pretty much anywhere, and there are many options online so you don’t even have to make a special trip to pick them up.

They’re inexpensive, take just seconds to wedge in between the vinyl siding panels, and is the most secure way.  Keep in mind that you probably can’t hang decorations that are hefty in their weight on vinyl siding, or you might cause some damage, but there’s no reason why lightweight decorations can’t be supported by any of these hanging methods.

New Vinyl Siding

Most homes in the midwest are usually hit by heavy winter storms and rain. The longer you go on without replacing your inferior siding, the more you lose on energy savings. Like your windows, your siding goes through deterioration and the worst of it comes when your siding does a poor job of keeping the weather outside of your home.

That’s why it’s important to keep an eye out for your siding and replace it before winter comes. At Feldco, we have the right team to get the job done. We have great products, professional installation and terrific local services. Speak to a product specialist about vinyl siding and get a free quote online today.
