Everything You Need to Know About Throwing a Great Basement Party

Some homeowners host parties in their home while others may take it to the garage. However, a basement party is the best party. There are so many different ways your basement could be transformed into the ultimate hangout spot.

Why would you even bother to host a basement party when you have an entire house? For starters, it’s much easier to clean up once the party ends. Also, it keeps everyone close and in an intimate setting.

We’ll show you a few ways to host a fantastic party in your basement. Your friends and family will love your new hangout spot.

Finish Your Basement

No one will ever come to your basement party if it’s in an unfinished basement. Concrete floors and bare walls are not what most would call a “fun party atmosphere”.

If you do have an unfinished basement, it’s time you consider finishing it. You’ll want to make sure that you put plywood or drywall over the walls and carpet or hardwood down for the floor. This will make your basement feel more like a room and less like a medieval dungeon.

Electricity is also extremely important for a finished basement. You’ll need it for lights, TVs and any other electronics you want down there to entertain guests.

Another feature that you may want to consider for your basement is a bathroom. This will require extra work but it’s worth it in the long run. First, you’ll need to make sure that you run the plumbing downstairs. Then, a small section of your basement will need to be walled off to create your bathroom.

This is perfect because if you don’t want people wandering around your house looking for your bathroom. You’ll be able to keep everything contained to the basement.

Make Sure You Have Plenty of Places to Sit

Once you’ve finished your basement, you’re going to need places for people to sit. The last thing you want is for all of your guests to be sitting on the ground – it’s very uncomfortable and people won’t be coming to your next party.

Start by having a large couch that everyone can sit on. The “L” shaped curved couches are a great example of a couch that offers enough seating for large parties.

You will also want to consider getting a table and chairs for downstairs. They’ll allow you to eat meals downstairs or have enough space to seat another 4 to 8 people depending on the size of the table.

Have Enough Things to do in Your Basement

Having seating in your basement is great, but what if there’s nothing to do? Then you’re just sitting in an empty room. Most of your guests are probably wondering one of two things, “What did they expect us to do at this party?” or “Why did I bother to show up to this party?” Either way, you don’t want this to happen.

You need to have some things for your guests to do and luckily, your basement can house many unique forms of entertainment. Pool, air hockey and Foosball tables are all very common basement games. Multiple guests can find entertainment just fooling around or getting competitive.

Creating a bar with darts is also a fun way to get everyone having a good time. Your guests will have a blast in a darts tournament. Even the non-participants will enjoy watching from the bar.

Maybe your guests are more into video games. A large screen TV and some video game consoles will do the trick in entertaining your guests. Plug in a Switch and have a great time playing games like Mario Kart (easy to pick up and play for just about anyone).

If you have the money and space, you can even consider building an arcade in your basement. Arcade machines aren’t difficult to find and are a cool way to entertain guests while making your basement look pretty cool at the same time.

While many of these ideas will entertain a few guests, you’ll need a few of them to entertain all guests. Mix and match these ideas (depending on the space in your basement) to come up with a fun environment for you and your friends.

A Basement Party is Nothing Without Music

A basement party would die without having some music playing. The right music can make or break your party so it’s important that you have a variety. Make sure your iPod or Mac are filled with tons of different songs.

If you’re playing the music off your Mac, no one is going to hear it. You need an awesome speaker system to really get your basement party going. Most speakers, including sound bars and surround sound, are bluetooth and allow you to play music from anywhere in your basement.

Just be careful not to disturb your neighbors. No matter how much you want an awesome basement party, you don’t want to disrespect your neighbors by playing loud music all night long. Maybe they need to be up for work in the morning. We hate to be the downer, but do the right thing and be respectful to your neighbors.

Your Party Will Get Hot and Stuffy Without Windows

If you want to drive people away from your basement party, make sure you have no windows in your basement. That way the entire room will become stuffy and insufferable. But, if you want to have a great party, you may want to consider having windows installed.

Operable windows give you the option to open and close them at will. This will give you great control over the temperature in your basement. The more people you have at your party, the more likely it is to get hot down there so having a few windows would be a life saver.

If you do want windows in your basement, you should consider vinyl windows. They’re more energy efficient, low maintenance and durable than their wood and aluminum counterparts.

Another great option for your basement is a sliding patio door. If your basement opens up to a ground level a patio door will maximize the amount of natural light and fresh air you allow into your home.

Host a Great Basement Party With These Tips

To throw an amazing basement party, you’re going to want to follow these tips. Start by finishing your basement, otherwise the party is going to be a flop. Then make sure there’s enough places to sit, things to do and awesome music and your party will be a success.
