Six Summer Home Improvement Projects to Try in 2023

Summer is here and with the warmer weather it’s the best time to try out a few projects that will improve your home.  From DIY projects to ones that require the help of a professional, cross these six things off of your to-do list this summer while the sun is out, and you can enjoy the results.

Power Wash Your House These Summer

What better way to give your home a quick boost in its curb appeal than to spend a few hours power washing it?  Power washing can be an easy do-it-yourself project that’s inexpensive and with immediately satisfying results.

First, choose a day with mild weather—not too hot, not too cold, and preferably overcast with no wind.  If you don’t have your own pressure washing machine, you can rent one for the day.  The amount of pressure you use will depend on the siding material.  For painted wood siding, aluminum siding, or stucco, you should aim to use 1,200 to 1,500 PSI.  For vinyl siding, use a machine that’s rated for 2,500 to 3,000 PSI.

A few guidelines for pressure washing your home:

  • Always wear eye protection.
  • Never use a ladder.
  • Make sure to close outdoor outlets before you pressure wash.
  • Never spray another person with the pressure washer.

Add a Garden

Gardens are an easy project that can be both useful and attractive for your home during the summertime.  Not only can you literally enjoy the fruits (or rather, vegetables) of your labor, but you’ll add a little curb side appeal with a trendy raised bed or two.

Raised garden bed kits are available at your local home improvement store or online.  These easy-to-follow kits are perfect for beginner DIYers and can be used for multiple seasons.  Gardens are a delightful and quick home improvement project ideal for the summer months.

Refinish Your Deck

There’s no better summer project than refinishing a deck.  With everyone outside all summer long and barbeques in full swing, now is a great time to refinish a deck to make it look its best.

refinishing your deck

You’ll need to pick out a stain.  Choose an exterior stain and sealer that’s right for your deck.  First, check to see if your deck’s wood is sealed by performing a water drop test.  When you pour a few drops of water onto the deck and the board absorbs the water, your deck needs sealing.  If the water beads, then the wood is sealed and doesn’t require sealant.

Power wash and sand the deck.  Apply the exterior stain you’ve selected with a paint sprayer or simply use rollers or paint brushes.  Remove any excess stain with an old rag.  Give the stain ample time to dry before reapplying another coat or using it.

Reseal Your Driveway

Giving your driveway a fresh coat of sealant is an instant transformation that’s perfect for a summer project.  You can do it yourself or you can hire a professional contractor to step in and do the job.  While it is a project that beginners can tackle, it is hot, messy, and laborious work.

If you choose to do it yourself, start by cleaning off the driveway of grass, weeds, and debris.  Use sealant to seal cracks and potholes.  Use a long-handle, soft-bristle brush to push the wet asphalt along the driveway, spreading an even coat of the asphalt as you move.

Upgrade Your Windows

If you’ve got extra money in the bank and want a serious home improvement project that will not just boost your curb appeal but also your home’s resale value, consider replacing your old windows.  You can replace windows on your own, but it’s not recommended.  Hire a professional window company before summer begins so you can have your windows replaced in the warmer months.

You’ll likely get a price break if you opt to do multiple windows at one time and you’ll be able to enjoy the breeze from your new windows all summer long.  When you go to resell your house and are able to use new windows as a hot selling point, you’ll be glad you made the investment.

Clean Your Gutters

Do you want to improve your home in one afternoon?  Clean your gutters!  It’s a task that sure isn’t fun in colder weather, so planning a day to clean out your gutters during the summer makes the task much more bearable.  You’ll thank yourself later as gutters help prevent your home from suffering from serious water damage.

Remember safety comes first when you’re cleaning out your gutters.  Wear proper shoes and safety gear like protective gloves when you’re cleaning.  Follow ladder safety precautions such as always using a friend or family member to spot you, placing the ladder on an even surface, and always using at least three points of contact at all times.
