How to Make a Window Seat for Your Furry Friends

little boy with a dogEverybody loves a room with a view, even the furriest members of your family – your pets! Turn an unused space into a window seat ideal for Fido or Mittens to enjoy a glimpse of the outside world. If you’re looking for a perfect weekend project, learn how to build a window seat with little skill and materials needed.

What You’ll Need

  • Fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing pins
  • Foam padding
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors
  • 2×4 wood boards
  • Wood screws
  • Drill

The Steps

Follow these steps to construct the perfect hang out spot for your pet! Bonus – not much skill or time involved!

Step 1: Choose the Perfect Spot

Pick a spot your pet frequently likes to visit. This will ensure your pet will get the most use out of his or her new window seat. If your dog or cat doesn’t have a favorite spot, choose a location that overlooks trees or a garden so they can have the perfect view of the wildlife outside.

It’s important to make sure the window isn’t too high off the ground or obstructed by other household objects. You want your pet to be able to easily access it at any time of day. Those little furry legs can only jump so high!

Step 2: Measure, Measure, Measuretape measure

Now that you have chosen the perfect window for your furry friend, it’s time to bring out the measuring tape. Horizontally measure the window you chose and decide on how large you want seat to be.  Keep an account of the window sill dimension, as well, since your seat will either sit on top of or flush against it.

Step 3: Go shopping!

Building the perfect pet window seat requires a few materials that can be easily found.  You may have some items already lying around the house and other materials you’re missing can be found at your nearest craft store.

To make the project simpler, many craft stores have premade window seat patterns that are easy to use. Find the pattern you like most, slip over your cushion or padding and you’re ready to go.

You also have the option of creating your own window seat pattern by buying the fabric and customizing it yourself. When choosing your fabric, consider a material that will be comfortable for your pet and not show much of the hair your pet will shed. This will make maintaining the seat easier.

Step 4: Cutting Your Fabric

Now that you have purchased the items you need, it’s time to cut the padding and your chosen fabric. This will make up the pillow that will be placed on top of your window seat for a more comfortable viewing experience for your pets.

When cutting the material, make sure you cut a size slightly larger than the padding you have. Do this to make sure you can sew up the open end once you are done. If the padding is the same size as your fabric, you will not be able to close up the pillow properly.

Step 5: Sew It All Up!sewing tools

If you have a sewing machine, this would be the perfect time to use it. Otherwise, a classic needle and thread will do the job as well.

The benefit of using a premade window seat pattern is that it will come with instructions on how to sew the fabric together and properly. However, if you have separate pieces of fabric, not much sewing skill is needed to make a beautiful seat cover. All you have to do is sew 2 pieces of fabric together – sizes depending on what your measured your window seat to be. Sew the long ends of each piece together and then sew one of the short ends of each piece together. This will create a pocket where you can slide the cushion in. Place the cushion piece inside and sew up the open end to complete construction of your window seat pillow.

Step 6: If You Build It, They Will Come

If you have a bow or bay window, great. Place your newly sewn window seat cushion on the existing window seat and you’re done. Your pet will now have a comfy place to hang out while they enjoy outside views!
